How to Unblock Facebook Login Page

How do you get on Facebook when it’s blocked in school, work or home?   Whatever your reasons may be, it’s often not easy to unblock Facebook or any other website.  But it’s possible.  Sometimes.  Here are some ways people have tried to do it.  Remember, businesses and schools have their own policies about which websites are allowed on their computers and which aren’t.

This article is only for general information and to let admins know how some security measures can be circumvented. For best Facebook blocking, I suggest you use a good Parental Controls program, and use strong passwords in your admin accounts.  I do not condone Facebook usage by minors, or use in schools or universities by students when it is against school policy.

Unblock Facebook Login Page with Proxy Servers

I’m sure you’ve heard of proxy servers and how you can access blocked URLs with them if they work.  I don’t recommend or condone the use of proxies.  Especially in places like schools, offices and libraries.  If you need to check Facebook, you can do that when you get home or next time you hit an Internet cafe or a bookstore with free Internet access.  However Facebook proxies are out there.  MakeUseOf has an article about it that you can check out.

Before you attempt to unblock Facebook with a proxy server, keep in mind:

  • Using proxies found online can be dangerous, especially if it’s a “free” proxy.  Many of them come up and go all the time.  You don’t know who runs them and what they do with your data.   Use free proxies at your own risk.
  • Even paid proxies need caution.  Don’t just trust them especially when you don’t know anyone else who has used them safely, or how long they have been in business.
  • Facebook proxies get blocked all the time.  As soon as a school or office admin (or your parents) find out about them, they can get blacklisted.
  • You can make your own proxy server.  But you’ll need a computer with a permanent Internet connection and special software. Then as long as you remember your proxy’s IP address, you can use it.  I’d rather not post the instructions here but you can google it. ;-)

Unblock Facebook with Alternative URLs

Sometimes you may get lucky and get into Facebook via an unblocked Facebook URL such as m.facebook.com.  If the admin forgot to block these related domains, that is.  You might also try translation services and cached pages in Google (though you won’t be able to log in with that).

Unblock Facebook Login via Browser Settings or Parental Controls

You may be able to unblock Facebook on your own if you have admin rights to do so.  This depends on how the site is blocked.  If it is blocked with software that is password-protected, such as a “Parental Controls” program or a browser like Internet Explorer, you would need know the password to unblock the Facebook home page.

On the other hand, sometimes you don’t need a password.  For instance,  a Firefox addon blocker named BlockSite has password-protection, but you don’t need the password to disable the extension.  You can disable addons in Firefox by going to Tools > Add-ons.  (If YOU are the admin, I would suggest you use a different method than a Firefox addon.)

If Facebook is blocked in Internet Explorer, it is password-protected. You must know the password to remove Facebook from the blocked list.  However, if you can log into Windows (or whatever OS it is) with a different user profile, you can check if Facebook isn’t blocked in Internet Explorer in that profile.

Unblock Facebook Login with HOSTS File Access

If Facebook is blocked via the Windows HOSTS file, you would have to edit that file.  And in newer systems, you would need to have administrator privileges to do so.  If you are logged in as a “user” or “guest’ only, you can’t.  Read about  the HOSTS file in this block Facebook article.

Unblock Facebook Login Indirectly with Email Notifications

If you can’t unblock the Facebook login URL directly, you might still be able to indirectly access your Facebook account.  Facebook users can opt to receive full-text notifications via email about their friends’ updates.  If you use a Web email like Yahoo! or Hotmail, and that site isn’t blocked, you can log in to that site and check it for Facebook notifications.  But to be able to read your friends’ updates in your mailbox, you must enable the notifications first.  This method relies on the Close Friends list feature, which lets you receive updates from your friends right in your inbox.

To get updates of Facebook friends via email:

  1. Sign in to Facebook on a computer where it isn’t blocked.
  2. Click Close Friends under Lists.  If you don’t see it, click More to expand the Lists box.
  3. Click the Notifications button at the top-right of the page.
  4. Select On Facebook and Email if it isn’t turned on already.
  5. Click the button next to it, Manage List.
  6. Click Add/Remove Friends…
  7. Click the photo of each friend you want to get updates from.
  8. Click Done.

Now you should receive notifications whenever your most important friends (those in your Close Friends list) do things like share links, comment on your posts and make status updates.  You should be able to read the full text of their statuses too. Just make sure the Web address you use to check your mail – say, the Gmail login page – isn’t blocked.

More on Your Facebook Email Notifications

You might also want to check the rest of your alert settings and edit them so you get all the updates you want via email or text.  To do this, go to Account Settings > Notifications.  Click each item to modify its settings accordingly.  You can control alerts for just about any event on Facebook.

UPDATE: Want to unblock Facebook log in home page with Facebook Email Notification Services?

While updating this blog entry, I looked around for Facebook apps that will update the user for friends’ updates.  Well, I came across two services that seem to do this.  But I don’t know how good they are yet.  One appears to be in beta testing (don’t know for how long now) and the other seems to have a free trial.

TheFriendMail Beta (thefriendmail.com)

Features:

  • Lets you send updates to Facebook via email
  • Lets you set up email alerts so you can read your News Feed, get birthday reminders and more in your inbox
  • Get updates on likes, comments, etc.
  • Support for multiple languages and mobile devices

NutShellMail (nutshellmail.com)

Originally designed to help employees circumvent email blocking in the workplace, NutShellMail added a social networking feature so users can read their Facebook and Twitter updates in their inbox.  The features seem similar to TheFriendMail.  You can read an article about it at AllFacebook (note the article is a couple of years old).

By the way, all this would be in vain if you didn’t have an up-to-date email address.  Here’s how to change your Facebook email address, username, etc.

  1. I’ve tried all and the one which worked and has been working for me is proxy. But when I do *** facebookloginhelp net / facebook-login-proxy, it runs too slow. Other sites run very fast but not the ones I run with proxy. Why is it so? Is there a fix for this?

    • You know, I’ve come across that URL you entered recently. My antivirus program blocked it because it detected a phishing file in it. Kaspersky is quirky sometimes but I’d rather not take the chance. I unlinked the URL but decided to keep your comment to warn others.

Using proxies is dangerous. I don’t recommend it. You use it at your own risk. Of course, one can build his or her own proxy server and use that. But there are specific requirements for it and one should be aware of the possible consequences of bypassing school or office security measures.
