Understanding the Facebook Login Home Page
Social networking with Facebook begins with its ultra-simple welcome login page. Unless you are quite inexperienced with using membership services online, you can find your way around on your own. This article is one of many tutorials for Facebook beginners and walks you through the home page.
Overview of the Facebook Login Home Page
Have a look at this short video walkthrough of the Facebook welcome area. This video was created in October 2011. Because Facebook keeps changing its interface, this video may be outdated.
Don’t have an account yet? See: How Do I Get on Facebook?
The login page is very clean and simple. You only need to concern yourself with a few things, and if you’re used to the Internet, it’s a no-brainer.
- Email and Password. Here’s where you enter your user credentials that you registered with on Facebook. Use either the email address that you supplied when you registered, any email address you have listed on your account, your Facebook vanity URL (usename) or your mobile phone number. For the password, it should be your Facebook login account password, not the password for the email account itself.
- Keep me logged in. Check this box if you want to stay signed in to Facebook. Otherwise don’t check it. Never enable this option on a computer that others may have access to, such a a library computer.
- Forgot your password? If you ever forget your Facebook password, click this link to initiate a password reset. Note that it’s important to keep your account details accurate for this.
- Sign Up. New to Facebook? Fill out this short form to register for an account. It’s free.
- Language. Not an English speaker? Facebook is available in many other languages.
The Facebook Login Home Page for Registered Facebook Users
If you have an existing Facebook account, all you concern yourself with is the form in the blue-colored area.
Under Email, enter any of the following:
- The primary email address you have linked to Facebook (most likely the one you registered with)
- Any secondary email address linked to your Facebook account
- Your Facebook username (the name in your vanity URL, ex: www.facebook.com/yourname)
- A mobile phone number linked to your account (including the area code)
Obviously, the Password field is where you input your password, a unique combination of characters that only you know. You choose a password when you first join Facebook; you can change it anytime via Account Settings. See Facebook password tips.

New User Registration at the Facebook Login Home Page
Don’t have a Facebook account yet? First fill out the Sign Up form and complete the registration process. As explained in the video above, you need to submit only a little personal information – name, sex, birth date, email and a password for your new account. See also How to get on Facebook.
Where to Sign in to the Facebook Login Home Page
You should always log into Facebook via “www.facebook.com” or, if using a mobile phone, the Facebook Mobile login page at “m.facebook.com” instead. Never click a link in an email or instant message that claims to take you to the Facebook login home page. Fake emails may take you to a phishing site instead. See Facebook login guide for a brief discussion of phishing.
Facebook Applications, Gadgets and Utilities
You should already know you can go to the Facebook log in page using a desktop computer, a laptop or a mobile device. You can also log in in different ways using software.
You can log in via:
- The home page (www.facebook.com/)
- A desktop application (ex: TweetDeck)
- A toolbar or plugin
- A widget or gadget (ex: Facebook gadget for iGoogle)
Special Facebook programs let you sign in to the site and keep signed in without going to the Facebook home page yourself. You get notifications and may be able to do some things such as post updates or photos. Applications can save you time, but they are unnecessary. If you tend to check Facebook only once a day or so, you don’t need an app or gadget. Just go to the home page and log out when you’re done.
Now you know how to log in to the social network, how about learning to blog on Facebook?

Make sure you log out of Facebook after you use it. Click “Log Out” on the “Home” menu. When it takes you to the Facebook login page, remove the check on “Keep me logged in” if it’s checked. You might also want to tell your Web browser to not save passwords for Facebook.
Your wife can log out your account too if she uses the computer and finds you are still logged in.
Does that solve the problem?
