Active Sessions: Can You Log into Facebook from Two Or More Computers?

When you are logged in to your Facebook account, are you the only one?  You aren’t going to know for sure unless you take advantage of some security features.  As of now, Facebook allows multiple logins to the same member’s account.

Multiple Facebook Logins

You can log into Facebook from two different computers or devices.  You can even sign in to the same account on the same computer but on different browsers.  For instance, it will let you log in from Firefox first and then Internet Explorer.

If another person obtains your password, that person can go to the Facebook login page, enter your credentials and get in your account as if they were you.

To help prevent your account from getting compromised, Facebook offers a number of opt-in security features.  Using these features, you can monitor your account logins and keep an eye out for unusual or unauthorized activity.  Two such features are Login Notifications and Active Sessions.

Active Sessions is a log of your recent sessions at Facebook.  Login Notifications sends you email and/or text alerts whenever someone logs in to your account from a new device.

How to View Your Active Sessions on Facebook

To see your open sessions on Facebook:

  1. Click the arrow next to Home on the toolbar.
  2. Click Account Settings.
  3. Click Security.
  4. Find Active Sessions and click Edit.

Facebook now displays a list of recent sessions on your account, with the current one at he top of the list.  The listing includes details about the device name (the name you gave it if you were the one who signed in with it), the approximate geographic location, the browser and operating system used and the time of access. Hovering the mouse over a session will reveal its IP address.

If you suspect a login is not yours, or if you forgot to log out of a remote session, click End Activity to end that session.  That session will disappear from the list.

How to Enable Login Notifications

Want to keep tabs on every Facebook login you make (or don’t make)?  Turn on this feature.

  1. Click the arrow next to Home.
  2. Click Account Settings.
  3. Click Security.
  4. Click Edit next to Login Notifications.
  5. Check Email or Text message or both.

Will I Know When Someone Else Logs into Facebook While I’m Online?

When you are logged in and Login Notifications is enabled, you should receive an instant message like what’s shown below if there’s an unknown login.

You can use the Active Sessions feature to end any unauthorized session.  Don’t forget to change your password immediately after, so the rogue can’t access your account again.

Security features like this can help make Facebook safer to use.  Take advantage of them.  See more Facebook login page security tips.

  1. Hi, I did have a list of active sessions but now only see the current one .. is this because I activated the login notification option?

Also, I always access from my home computer via Google Chrome and WinVista, however, the list detailing active sessions seemed to show different IP addresses and location in either High Wycombe or London … I am in Edinburgh and only one IP address here?

Any ideas why this is so?

    Thanks Gill

    • Only active sessions are shown. If you close a session or it is logged out, it won’t show.

If you see any session that looks unfamiliar to you, click “End Activity” immediately. The locations are approximate only. Your city may change from time to time and it should say “approximate.” Check if the session used the same browser and OS. Again, if in doubt, close it immediately, change your password and increase your security settings.
