Why Use Emoticons on Facebook Chat?
Sometimes what you mean is not always clear to the person you are chatting with. This has always been true for all kinds of Internet chatting, instant messaging and email. To avoid misunderstandings, people began using emoticons, also known as smileys. Originally these were combinations of characters that conveyed specific expressions. When you tilt your head sideways you will see the smiling face or whichever it is.
Later on as Internet chat and instant messaging applications became more advanced, these characters were converted into graphics of faces showing the expressions.
